Janubio and Los Hervideros

Saltwork of Janubio

The southern coast of the island underwent a tremendous transformation with volcanic eruptions from 1730 to 1736, Janubio and Los Hervideros are a good example of this. This part of the island is much enjoyed by driving, or if you like to exercise, the bike is a good means of transport to marvel at the conjunction of volcanic landscape and sea.

The saltworks of Janubio are the largest on the island of Lanzarote. The eruptions closed the old gulf leaving the interior lagoon of Janubio and in 1865 the saltwoks were built, being the main economic engine for the brine industry and the salting of fish, providing the fishing boats that were fishing in the area. The salt industry fell into decline with the use of cold rooms in fishing and a part of the salt works was no longer in use.

Declared a protected natural space, the area that is currently in exploitation has been restored. It is possible to buy sea salt harvested by hand in the same winery of Janubio.

Beyond the lagoon, the beach of Janubio extends, a beach that makes clear with its black sand, which is of volcanic origin. The beach is perfect for walking. The strong currents, as well as the waves make the bath inadvisable, and the permanent red flag warns us of it. Although we can always walk barefoot along the shore and refresh our feet!

Undoubtedly the best sunset on the island is the one that can be admired from Janubio, either sitting on the beach, or on top from the viewpoint. That moment in which the sun is setting and the sky is dyed red and pink tones, which highlight even more the reddish one of the salinas. A show that repeats itself every day to leave us in awe.

Los Hervideros

A little beyond Janubio, in the direction of El Golfo, we find another of the natural wonders of the south of the island: Los Hervideros. Its name comes from when the sea boiled because of the lava of the eruptions; although the name keeps coming perfect, since the water, when beating with force and leaving through the blowholes, seems to boil.

The area of Los Hervideros has a large parking lot where we can leave our vehicle. From which we have a good view of the coast, and if the sea is raging the picture is spectacular.

Different roads meander through the badlands to take us to balconies of volcanic stone, which offer us different views of the caves and buffalo in the area. If the sea beats with force, we can get to get wet in the lowest part, so we must be careful if we do not want to accidentally bathe. If we go with small children, it is advisable to keep an eye on them and remember that you do not have to leave the designated paths, since Los Hervideros is part of the protected area of the Volcanoes Natural Park.
