César Manrique’s artwork shines on this tour of places that have become immortalised by Lanzarote’s creative ambassador.
César Manrique has always been Lanzarote’s artistic son. A visionary who knew how to make the most of the elements available to create magnificent art and spaces where light, water or nature play a fundamental part. But so do his people.
This is the case of Monumento al Campesino, the first stop on our tour of César Manrique’s works of art. A snow-white sculpture erected in the middle of volcanic landscape to pay tribute the islanders who have a deep bond with the land.
Mirador del Río, Lanzarote is the next stop after our visit to Monumento al Campesino. A contemporary viewpoint installed in the Famara cliffs. Here you can admire the breathtaking panorama of el Rio (the straits) and especially the island of La Graciosa, recently named the eighth Canary Island. The perfect place to relax, breath in the Atlantic air and re-energise before embarking on our next adventure.
Lanzarote is home to a series of caves and tunnels that connect the heart of the island to the ocean. Ancient passages that still harbour whispers of slaves and pirates of old, and which today receive more light than ever before. Enjoy a tour of Cueva de los Verdes, Lanzarote and you’ll feel like you’re in another planet, before entering Jameos del Agua, another obligatory stop that you must see during any tour of the north of Lanzarote. A museum where the caves, light, cactus and the pools set an exotic, yet Martian scene.
Cactus is synonymous with Lanzarote, and Lanzarote is synonymous with César Manrique A concept perfectly represented by another of César Manrique’s works of art, the Cactus Garden Lanzarote, which is home to thousands of these plants, scattered around a volcanic setting. The best place to see before reaching the high point of this tour.
The César Manrique Foundation is located in the artist’s favourite town, Tahiche. Now a museum devoted to César Manrique, this is another example of nature in perfect harmony where you can discover the various accomplishments of this universal artist. It transports us back to another time, perhaps the hippie era of the 60s, and spaces that blend with the island’s environment like this swimming pool set underneath a jameo (open hole of a lava bubble).
Entrance to these centres are included and pick-ups are available from Costa Teguise, Arrecife, Puerto del Carmen, Puerto Calero and Playa Blanca.
