If you’re looking for a unique Lanzarote day tour, we have the perfect excursion for you through the north of Lanzarote, which includes Cesar Manrique’s exceptional masterpiece.
Apart from its beaches and volcanoes, Lanzarote is an island brimming with culture. From white-walled villages to solitary sculptures, to viewpoints and exotic gardens, the easternmost Canary Island is a treat for your senses.
Our Lanzarote north island tour starts in the old town of Teguise, one of the best places to see in Lanzarote. With cobblestone streets full of culture and tradition, colourful markets in Teguise old town – known as ‘La Villa’ – this is the perfect way to discover the island’s old capital.
Among the places to see in the north of Lanzarote, they all have something to do with César Manrique. The artist who managed to cleverly blend art and nature throughout the different paradisiacal sites that are scattered around the island, Mirador del Rio being one of the most famous. A viewpoint carved into the cliff that affords the most magnificent views over the Rio – the straits that separate Lanzarote and La Graciosa – officially the eighth Canary Island. Admire the huge crater of Volcan de la Corona and the different villages we discover on the way to Mirador del Rio, before going on to Manrique’s other wonders.
Whispers of pirates and hidden slaves can still be heard in Cueva de los Verdes, part of the cave system that meanders underground in the north of Lanzarote. César Manrique transformed this ancient passageway that connects inland Lanzarote to the sea in the 1960s, to make visiting possible.
Once we’ve discovered the passageways of this natural wonder, we’ll descend into the three caves that make up Jameos del Agua. This rugged cave system houses an auditorium, bars, cactus and natural swimming pools that César Manrique adapted to create an incredible fusion of nature and island art. The grown-ups will be fascinated and the children, delighted, with the ancient tales that surround this part of Lanzarote.
To round off our Lanzarote north island tour, we stop by the Lanzarote Aloe Vera Museum in Punta Mujeres, where we can see first-hand the skill and cultivation of this trusty plant which is so prevalent on Lanzarote.
Entrance to Jameos del Agua is included in this route through the north of Lanzarote and pick-ups are available from Costa Teguise, Arrecife, Puerto del Carmen, Puerto Calero and Playa Blanca.
